Lot 5233
Abramios, spatharokandidatos, asekretis and ek prosopou of Antioch, 10th-11th centuries. Seal (Lead, 28 mm, 18.00 g, 12 h). KЄ BOH / [T]Ⲱ CⲰ Δ૪/…PAMI / [C]ΠAΘ’ in four lines. Rev. KAN [A]/CHKPI[T S] / EK A'C[ⲰΠ] ANT’ in four lines. Cf. Cheynet, Zacos BnF, no. 7. Scrape on the obverse, otherwise, very fine.

From a European collection, formed before 2005.

Due to its 'provincial' epigraphy, exact dating of this seal is problematic. Interestingly, a seal mentioning the same name and titles was published by Cheynet (Zacos BnF, no. 7). That specimen, from the Zacos collection, is of fine style, and it was evidently made by an experienced die engraver. It also adds the family name Apolethes, which is otherwise unattested. Our seal may well have been Abramios' first seal, in use before his commissioned seal was available.
